SPORTS TEAM 5/12/19 LONDON

20/03/2020

I only heard about this band around half way through this past year if I remember, hearing about human pyramids and literal injuries. I'd heard a couple songs before and decided to take them up upon hearing about them playing Reading Festival, and it's safe to say I'm very glad I discovered them in the end

This was quite a last minute decision for me as I wasn't even aware of the gig a week before it happened, until I heard a few mates were going so thought why not (even if it was down in London). How much I liked the band at this point made up for the fact it was about a fiver a pint in the capital, didn't make it any less painful to buy though I can't lie. Sports Team is a much lesser known band compared to the previous two bands I've talked about (obviously) but with this comes a level of fan interaction and connection I've never seen before, from being in literal group chat with the band members just casually chatting to them to hosting a pre-event and an after party at pubs nearby the venue, it's incredible. After seeing the support act they began with 'Margate', a high energy, mental start to the set with my mate falling over about 2 minutes in, so no slow start by any means. I'd say the whole gig was probably the most insane, 'moshy' concert I've ever been to, I mean I think I actually saw god when 'M5' came on. Half of this was due to the crowd jumping and going mad for every song without fail as well as the front man Alex constantly interacting and riling the crowd up. A special moment during the set was around halfway through when he recognised someone in the crowd and said something like 'I've seen you at every show, like I've watched you grow up' which whole heartedly shows the love the band has for the fans, and the relationship between them, it's just amazing honestly. The set continued with recent class singles such as 'Fishing' and, my favourite 'The Races' making it's live début becoming an instant classic (almost killing me and Jasmine again). As usual the set ends with 'Kutcher' and 'Stanton' from the early days of the band, which unsurprisingly proved hot and sweaty bumping into people falling over. It's no surprise the after party at a local pub in Camden got shut down early as the number there was high, saying that though we did manage to meet and chat with the band, not a bad turn out to say the least

There's a real sense of community in the band-fan relationship in smaller artists, and Sports Team showcase this brilliantly whilst giving some of the most memorable gig experiences you'll have today, even if you're not in the group chat
