Every The 1975 song ranked (most of them)

23/12/2020

Felt like I couldn't do one for AM and not make a list for the 1975, also we're still in tier 3 so there's basically nothing to do, missing out a couple of the interlude tracks and short instrumentals (saying that alot of the B-sides this time around have alot more to them)

77. By Your Side

76. Talk!

75. Please Be Naked

74. How to Draw/Petrichor

73. Anobrain

These are pretty much the only ones I don't really care for, Matty himself doesn't really like By Your Side and I don't blame him. Please Be Naked isn't a bad instrumental at all, but it's one I never go back to. I only noticed it was okay when the listening party for the second album happened back in May, only worth hearing within the context of a full listen imo. Petrichor is actually a decent track, but it's let down by the fact I have to skip through whatever How To Draw is to enjoy it. Talk! just has a bit of a weird pace that doesn't appeal to me for the most part

72. Surrounded By Heads And Bodies

71. Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You

70. Woman

69. Haunt // Bed

68. Facedown

67. Mine

66. Playing On My Mind

65. Intro / Set3

Although much of the first album sounds very similar, Set3 and Facedown are a prime example and probably explains why they got cut. The sentiment of Heads And Bodies is nice, talking about someone he met during rehab, but it comes out as a bit forgettable, same goes for MIne. Playing On My Mind mirrors that of She Lays Down and Nana, but nowhere near as good

64. M.O.N.E.Y

63. So Far (It's Alright)

62. Chocolate

61. Antichrist

60. Having No Head

59. Settle Down

58. Pressure

First album era getting shafted slightly, the last two for again sounding interchangeable from eachother (not that they're bad, but just a common theme for the album) Having No Head does What Menswear does in taking ages to actually start, except for about 3 minutes it's essentially white noise until the beat drops. The starting, deeper vocals on Antichrist are something I think only found here, but it drops off quickly. Chocolote isn't this low because it's popular, but it does get repetitive very fast (great live though)

57. Heart Out

56. Don't Worry

55. Undo

54. Shiny Collarbone

53. Milk

52. Yeah I Know

51. Medicine

50. Menswear

49. You

48. If I Believe You

The drums combined with the clapping sounded effect and choir vocals in the background of If I Believe You are produced brilliantly, but serve as my least favourite of ILIWYS despite how good of an album it is. Matty's dads' voice on Don't Worry are the only thing I like about it I think. Milk is one of the best B-sides from the 1975, thank god we found manchester tickets and they actually played it. Shiny Collarbone is again a well produced and interesting instrumental break in Notes, but not a song I'd come back to. Heart Out is one of my favourites off the first album, even if it again comes out feeling a little samey

47. She Lays Down

46. Inside Your Mind

45. Robbers

44. The City

43. Lostmyhead

42. The Ballad Of Me And My Brain

41. This Must Be My Dream

Ballad is another song I wish was back on the setlist, desperate screaming vocals and disjointed structure fit the themes involved. She Lays Down isn't as downing as Nana, but it's up there (or down there)

40. Inside Your Mind

39. ILIWYS Instrumental Title Track

38. Bagsy Not In Net

37. Me

36. heads.cars.bending

35. Tonight I Wish I Was Your Boy

34. Lostmyhead

33. What Should I Say

32. Sincerity Is Scary

31. TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME

The autotuned vocals in TOOTIME grew on me after a couple of listens, I can't imagine it without. Never really took note of the second album title instrumental until the listening party back in May, but it's unique structure and layers of effects combine to make the best 1975 instrumental track to date. I also have the hat from the Sincerity music video, best purchase of 2020. Think Matty said Kanye was an inspiration for some of the album, 32 and 34 are prime examples

30. Nothing Revealed / Everything Denied

29. UGH!

28. Then Because She Goes

27. I Like America And America Likes Me

26. The Birthday Party

25. Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America

24. Roadkill

23. If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)

22. Somebody Else

21. Be My Mistake

Got lucky enough to hear Be My Mistake acoustic live, exaggerating it's brilliant simplicity. Although Somebody Else is greatly overplayed, it's still a great emotional track, putting upbeat instrumentals to depressing lyrics (as they often do) Although If You're Too Shy took too long to come out, could listen to it forever. 2005 took alot of growing, but I'd say it's one of the high points on Notes along with The Birthday Party

20. I Think There's Something You Should Know

19. Fallingforyou

18. Girls

17. Frail State Of Mind

16. Me And You Together Song

15. Loving Someone

14. Sex

13. She Way Out

12. She's American

11. A Change Of Heart

Girls shows off how well the band can pull off feel good pop music, She's American only building on what the first album did. Frail State takes an interesting and personal dive into social anxiety, providing a feeling of connection and initmacy. Really wish Loving Someone would replace it's former counterpart at live shows, much better in it's composition

10. Nana

Hands down the most depressing song I've listened to (I miss my nan)

9. Love It If We Made It

The driving drums and impressive vocals from Matty prove this to be a powerful track in the listing

8. The Sound

Think this is one of the better known songs that gets played at every Saturday in Moka but it's just a well made pop song, plus the 'moshpit' finisher live is the stuff of dreams

7. Love Me

Trav looked like the happiest man alive when this came on in Birmingham and I don't blame him, kicking off a near perfect album

6. Give Yourself A Try

This was actually one of my least favourites out of the discography to start with, but it's quickly grown on me as an incredible opener

5. Guys

Similar to the next one, but feels a bit more upbeat despite the somber and reminiscent subject matter (probably shouldn't listen to this during lockdown) If you saw me cry to this in Birmingham, you didn't

4. I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)

A simple, yet effective mix of simple guitar work and intimate vocals. Also might've shed a tear slightly during this, but come on, this is so nice to hear live (especially going into the last chorus where Matty shut up to let everyone else sing it)

3. It's Not Living (If It's Not With You)

This would deserve the spot purely for the entire crowd singing 'selling petrol' during the second verse, but the addicting guitars and drum work by George only add to it

2. People

Easily the best opener they've ever had, the transition from the Brief Inquiry title track to this never gets old. It shows off the band's ability to try out different genres and styles, and I just hope more of this comes at some point

1. Paris

Everything about this song, in my opinion, encapsulates the best qualities of the band. I'd say this is their best work lyrically, the instrumentals and everything just sort of work perfectly, and I'm still annoyed I bailed on getting a Liverpool ticket where they played it for the 4 year anniversary of ILIWYS (put the acoustic version on spotify)
